Jenny Whiteley selected biography

What do you do to follow up an eponymous debut solo cd that you produce and release yourself, which successfully distances you from your Bluegrass past, while keeping the roots firmly planted? It also wins you a 2000 Juno award for roots/traditional album of the year: solo. Well, you take a deep breath and thank life for sending you such talented people to work with (Dan Whiteley, Joey Wright, Amy Millan, to name a few). You also get married, have a baby and move to the country from your hometown of Toronto.

A few years later, you make another cd, hire your favorite Canadian producer, Steve Dawson. You call those talented people again. You call it Hopetown. Then you wait. Then you read some really good reviews. And then, remarkably, you receive a second Juno award for roots traditional album of the year: solo, in Winnipeg in 2004. Now this is getting tricky...

Since the beginnings of my old band, Heartbreak Hill, in the late nineties, I have been singing, writing songs, and playing music for a living. Nothing makes me happier. I have had the chance to perform all over North America at many of the premier venues and festivals, and have shared the stage with countless wonderful musicians and some of my heroes. I also get the chance to make music with my family all the time! I am a lucky girl.

I am also a big believer in community and collaboration, witness my other family, the Hootenanny Review. So when the chance to make another cd came to me, through my lovely label, Black Hen Music, I called Steve Dawson, and said, let's call those talented people again. We're going to call this cd Dear. It's going to be a September release. It's going to be a joy to make, and I hope you like it.
